Greenville sales tax on food

REPUBLICAN LIBERTY CAUCUS FILES FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT REQUEST

Last week Greenville County citizens found out that, if the sales tax referendum were to pass in November, they would be subject to a brand new grocery tax. This is in direct contradiction to the assurances given by members of County Council and to the claims made by the SC Realtors Association in a recent mailer.

What did they know, and when did they know it?

The Republican Liberty Caucus of Greenville has filed a FOIA request to find out. We have requested all communications by County Councilman Butch Kirven that are relevant to the sales tax referendum and the grocery tax.

“People have a right to know what it is they are voting on, and whether or not their public officials have been misinforming them, and if so, why,” says Justin Alexander, a member of the RLC and the citizen who filed the request. “And we are going to find out.”

The RLC of Greenville remains committed to keeping the citizens of Greenville informed on this issue, and to opposing the sales tax referendum.
