{"id":5277,"date":"2011-07-21T13:12:24","date_gmt":"2011-07-21T18:12:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kevinbryant.com\/?p=5277"},"modified":"2011-07-21T13:12:24","modified_gmt":"2011-07-21T18:12:24","slug":"steven-khoury-sign-this-pledge-help-save-this-countr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kevinbryant.com\/kbarchive\/steven-khoury-sign-this-pledge-help-save-this-countr\/","title":{"rendered":"Steven Khoury: Sign This Pledge, Help Save This Countr"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><span id=\"internal-source-marker_0.09444390749558806\">Sign This Pledge, Help Save This Country<\/span><br \/>\n<span>While working on the Hill as an intern, there were many interesting events that happened on a daily basis. \u00a0The duties I had to perform as an intern included giving Capitol tours, working on legislative projects for the\u00a0Legislative Correspondents and Assistants, attending hearings and briefings for the staff, sorting through constituent mail, and answering constituent phone calls. \u00a0The majority of phone calls from constituents and others could be described as quite interesting. \u00a0Many different people called our office \u2013 conservatives, liberals, southerners, northerners, and people of all ages. \u00a0During my time in the Senate, I answered hundreds of phone calls. \u00a0However, there is one particular phone call that stuck with me. \u00a0An elderly woman called the office in great fear for this country. \u00a0Her fear was due to the fact that the current\u00a0administration and members of the United States Congress want to raise our nation\u2019s debt limit even higher than the current $14.294 trillion limit. \u00a0I do not blame this woman for being fearful. \u00a0All Americans should be fearful for this country\u2019s future.<\/span><br \/>\n<span>An increase of the debt limit would only drive our nation into even more of a wreck. \u00a0This country is in such a horrible crisis right now because the government truly is not making fiscally responsible decisions. \u00a0Instead, they are doing many things they should not do and most of all cannot afford to do. \u00a0Borrowing more money without cutting spending is one of the most irresponsible decisions for America and its future. \u00a0Fortunately, there are many Members of Congress who disagree with their colleagues in raising our nation\u2019s debt limit. \u00a0These select few in opposition have come up with a \u201cCut, Cap, &amp; Balance Pledge\u201d for all Americans. <\/span><br \/>\n<span>The \u201cCut, Cap, &amp; Balance\u201d pledge is simple in its appearance, yet it has a strong message. \u00a0It will have a profound impact on America if citizens who are concerned about our country\u2019s future, would take a few seconds and sign the pledge. \u00a0The pledge asks for citizens to advise their Senators and House Representatives to oppose any debt limit increase unless all three of the following conditions have been met: \u201c(1) <\/span><span>Cut<\/span><span> &#8211; Substantial cuts in spending that will reduce the\u00a0deficit next year and thereafter (2) <\/span><span>Cap<\/span><span> &#8211; Enforceable spending caps that will put federal spending on a path of a balanced budget, and (3) <\/span><span>Balance<\/span><span> \u2013 Congressional passage of a Balanced Budget\u00a0Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, but only if it includes both a spending limitation and a super-majority for raising taxes, in addition to balancing revenues and expenses.\u201d \u00a0This simple pledge can influence our leaders to focus more on the country\u2019s future and cut the frivolous spending. <\/span><br \/>\n<span>I would like to echo this concerned woman\u2019s fear for our country to everyone in America. \u00a0I definitely received phone calls bizarre and extreme, but I can promise you that this woman\u2019s call wasn\u2019t anything of the sort. \u00a0This country\u2019s staggering debt is going to affect us all in a negative way, especially us young people. \u00a0So I urge Americans to sign the \u201cCut, Cap, &amp; Balance\u201d pledge to get America back to a point where increasing the debt limit is not necessary.<\/span><br \/>\n<span>To sign the pledge, visit <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cutcapbalancepledge.com\/\"><span>www.cutcapbalancepledge.com<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>Steven Khoury works for the Senate in our office (Bryant &amp; Gregory).
