Although not as stringent as I would have liked, the Senate did pass an immigration reform bill with\u00a0merit. Here is a press release from the SC Senate Republican Caucus<\/a>:\u00a0Senate Restores Strength to Illegal Immigration Reform Act <\/o:p><\/font><\/font>Urges House to Concur with Stronger Bill<\/o:p><\/font><\/font>Columbia, SC – Senator Jim Ritchie, (R-13) Majority Whip, took the <\/font><\/font>Senate floor today reassuring the people of South Carolina that strength <\/font><\/font>and effectiveness are at the heart of the Senate\u2019s Illegal Immigration <\/font><\/font>Reform Act.<\/o:p><\/font><\/font>\u201cThis breakthrough legislation requires public and private employers <\/font><\/font>to verify new workers to address this growing crisis,\u201d says Ritchie.

\nThe Senate \u201crejects the House\u2019s \u2018don\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell\u2019 <\/font><\/font>policy, restored stronger penalties, and will require that all <\/font><\/font>businesses verify the legal immigration status of new hires,\u201d says <\/font><\/font>Senator Ritchie. \u201cWe have been working on true illegal immigration <\/font><\/font>reform for over a year and today\u2019s action builds effective, <\/font><\/font>comprehensive reforms with real strength.\u201d

\nThe Senate bill requires public and private employee verification, <\/font><\/font>prevents illegal aliens from receiving public benefits, expands <\/font><\/font>penalties for identity theft and fraud, and allows state law enforcement<\/o:p><\/font><\/font>to enact a memorandum of understanding with the federal officials which <\/font><\/font>provides them the authority to enforce federal immigration and customs <\/font><\/font>laws. The Senate also maintained provisions allowing civil lawsuits to<\/o:p><\/font><\/font>be filed against employers who fire South Carolinians for the purpose of <\/font><\/font>hiring illegal aliens.

\n\u201cIllegal immigration is one of the top concerns across the state and <\/font><\/font>the Senate Republican Caucus has produced a solid bill that answers the <\/font><\/font>call from the people of South Carolina that something be done,\u201d says <\/font><\/font>Senate Majority Leader Harvey Peeler (R-Cherokee). <\/font><\/font>\u201cWhat the Senate has done today creates a much stronger bill than we <\/font><\/font>have seen to this point,\u201d says Senate President Pro Tempore, Glenn <\/font><\/font>McConnell (R-Charleston). \u201cThe Senate has taken the lead on this issue<\/o:p><\/font><\/font>for over a year and we continued to strengthen the bill with the actions <\/font><\/font>taken today.\u201d

\n<\/font><\/font>The Illegal Immigration Reform Act now returns to the House where they <\/font><\/font>must \u201cconcur\u201d or \u201cnonconcur\u201d with the amendments. Should the<\/o:p><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> House \u201cconcur,\u201d the bill will be ratified and sent to the Governor. <\/font><\/font>Should the House \u201cnonconcur,\u201d the bill will go to conference <\/font><\/font>committee where three Senators and three House members will work toward a final resolution.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
