Here is a press release from the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/schotlinepress.wordpress.com\/2008\/02\/14\/senate-restores-strength-to-illegal-immigration-reform-act\/\">SC Senate Republican Caucus<\/a>:\u00a0Senate Restores Strength to Illegal Immigration Reform Act <o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Urges House to Concur with Stronger Bill<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Columbia, SC &#8211; Senator Jim Ritchie, (R-13) Majority Whip, took the <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Senate floor today reassuring the people of South Carolina that strength <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">and effectiveness are at the heart of the Senate\u2019s Illegal Immigration <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Reform Act.<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u201cThis breakthrough legislation requires public and private employers <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">to verify new workers to address this growing crisis,\u201d says Ritchie.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\nThe Senate \u201crejects the House\u2019s \u2018don\u2019t ask, don\u2019t tell\u2019 <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">policy, restored stronger penalties, and will require that all <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">businesses verify the legal immigration status of new hires,\u201d says <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Senator Ritchie. \u201cWe have been working on true illegal immigration <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">reform for over a year and today\u2019s action builds effective, <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">comprehensive reforms with real strength.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\nThe Senate bill requires public and private employee verification, <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">prevents illegal aliens from receiving public benefits, expands <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">penalties for identity theft and fraud, and allows state law enforcement<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">to enact a memorandum of understanding with the federal officials which <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">provides them the authority to enforce federal immigration and customs <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">laws. The Senate also maintained provisions allowing civil lawsuits to<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">be filed against employers who fire South Carolinians for the purpose of <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">hiring illegal aliens.<br \/>\n<\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\u201cIllegal immigration is one of the top concerns across the state and <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">the Senate Republican Caucus has produced a solid bill that answers the <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">call from the people of South Carolina that something be done,\u201d says <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Senate Majority Leader Harvey Peeler (R-Cherokee). <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">\u201cWhat the Senate has done today creates a much stronger bill than we <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">have seen to this point,\u201d says Senate President Pro Tempore, Glenn <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">McConnell (R-Charleston). \u201cThe Senate has taken the lead on this issue<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">for over a year and we continued to strengthen the bill with the actions <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">taken today.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n\u201cOur citizens have rightly demanded legislation that will effectively <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">deter illegal aliens from coming to South Carolina,\u201d says Senator<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">Ritchie. \u201cThe Senate has answered the call of the people with this <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">landmark reform.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">The Illegal Immigration Reform Act now returns to the House where they <\/font><\/font><font size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">must \u201cconcur\u201d or \u201cnonconcur\u201d with the amendments.
