Along those lines, I think it&#8217;s worth reading op-eds by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/m1e.net\/c?47206186-H7k\/Hg2EgTFec%404656527-xfwXt8gY0VZN%2e\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Kevin Fisher<\/span><\/a> in Columbia and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/m1e.net\/c?47206186-xLCRRmzS1bTAU%404656528-wKiPZbcnreAyw\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Keith Munson<\/span><\/a> in the Upstate.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday and Tuesday, I spoke with and met a number of business leaders and CEOs to advance the ball with regard to the state&#8217;s economic development. Although these kinds of efforts have been central to our work over the last seven years &#8211; as evidenced by the fact that Google, Boeing, Adidas, Starbucks, Michelin, among many others, have made major investments in South Carolina in recent years &#8211; it was nice to see the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/m1e.net\/c?47206186-KlRzbrr0NYkCU%404656529-KQJGs3.hRqebQ\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Associated Press take note<\/span><\/a> of our continued efforts. As the AP put it, &#8220;Business leaders say they&#8217;re seeing [our administration] more engaged in economic development efforts than ever.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday had us over in Marion County, where the Softee Supreme Diaper Company announced a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/m1e.net\/c?47206186-gd4D214uMEySU%404656530-Y6QXhPY9lcP4s\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">$6 million investment<\/span><\/a> that will create\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/m1e.net\/c?47206186-xTjxo2apHLtZA%404656531-hMGs3aJK8w0H%2e\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">262 jobs<\/span><\/a>. This represents the single largest economic\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/m1e.net\/c?47206186-cE6v9pru6ajME%404656532-o776\/FP.\/pcA%2e\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">announcement<\/span><\/a> in Marion County since the Department of Commerce was created in 1991. Later that day, I\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/m1e.net\/c?47206186-ig14ZKR5zh6GA%404656533-VFy88qK9OOdcQ\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">spoke to a Rotary Club down in Walterboro<\/span><\/a>, again emphasizing the need to undertake serious reform efforts in the 2010 legislative session &#8211; especially restructuring, spending caps, and tort reform.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/m1e.net\/c?47206186-YiF2P78nAyvlg%404656534-17LUI.EKn0VeE\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.governorsanford.com\/img\/Lake%2520Marion.jpg?resize=189%2C147\" alt=\"Times &amp; Democrat - Sanford at Lake Marion HS\" hspace=\"6\" vspace=\"4\" width=\"189\" height=\"147\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">On Wednesday, I was able to visit a class at Lake Marion High School in Santee that&#8217;s participating in South Carolina&#8217;s Jobs for America&#8217;s Graduates (JAG-SC) program. As the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/m1e.net\/c?47206186-VUIJFc\/I\/r.Jo%404656535-pfqsYggNh7lA2\" target=\"_blank\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Times &amp; Democrat<\/span><\/em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> explained<\/span><\/a>, &#8220;Thirty-five LMHS students take part in JAG-SC, a dropout prevention program focused on academic success and career readiness skills.&#8221; I spoke to a bright and engaged group of young people about making sure they&#8217;re aiming towards a goal in life, and I was incredibly impressed by the responses many of them had to my questions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/m1e.net\/c?47206186-njxOfwVyYBFfA%404656536-ifeYOOHFBQ3x%2e\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.governorsanford.com\/img\/Augusta%2520Stop%25202.jpg?resize=189%2C147\" alt=\"Augusta Chronicle - Sanford at Aiken Tech\" hspace=\"6\" vspace=\"4\" width=\"189\" height=\"147\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a>The next day I visited the Savannah River Site, where I was given a tour of some of the facilities there. From there we headed over to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/m1e.net\/c?47206186-iYxcGQ4Yvj2JI%404656537-RgLrXxBGvOVrE\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Aiken Technical College&#8217;s One-Stop Career Center<\/span><\/a> (click\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/m1e.net\/c?47206186-LKzg8CGFCv\/0U%404656538-T\/jTxjAYnJwMQ\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">here<\/span><\/a> for video coverage), where I was able to get some working knowledge of how our state can best connect people with jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, today our office\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/m1e.net\/c?47206186-3uliOhlnm6JGk%404656539-yTzEXQpD32XpM\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">announced<\/span><\/a> a roundtable discussion on workforce development scheduled for later this month. We plan on hosting state legislators, business and community leaders, government officials, and members of the media and public to discuss reform at the Employment Security Commission, as well as the best way to address the billion-dollar Unemployment Insurance deficit.
