cwp renewal problems @ SLED

August 28, 2013 by Kevin Bryant

gunWe get a lot of e-mails like this one. Below is my answer.

Mr. Senator: I’m writing about the amount of time it takes SLED to renew a CWP (concealed weapon permit). I electronically sent my renewal information and fees to SLED seven weeks ago. The state immediately debited my bank account, and as yet, I’ve heard nothing from SLED regarding my renewal. My current permit expired ten days ago, and at this point, I cannot legally protect myself or my family away from home. One would think an electronic renewal could be completed in over two months. I know you’re busy with more important things in the State, but this is something that can effect the safety of many South Carolina residents. Thank you.
John Q. Citizen

answer:

Mr/Mrs/Ms. Citizen, this year’s budget contains a temporary law that prohibits SLED from revoking an expired cwp license if the holder applied for a renewal on time. In other words, if it is the agency’s fault (in this case it most definitely is), your license will not expire. This temporary law is simply a bandaid on a much larger problem we have with an inefficient agency. I’ve had numerous constituents having the same cwp renewal issues as yourself.

I would continue to protect yourself with your concealed weapon, however, it would be a good idea to carry a printout of your renewal with your cwp.

On a side note, I support legislation making the cwp optional. Why on earth should you need government’s permission to fulfill a right acknowledged in the 2nd amendment of the United State’s Constitution?

Have a good day.

response to recent letter to editor

August 21, 2013 by Kevin Bryant

2013.08.08.independent.mailI’m not quite sure where this came from, but here’s my response to a recent letter to the editor in the Anderson Independent Mail.

Does Bryant not want competition? (Manuel Krupshow)
Question: Why isn’t there a pharmacy at the Ingles store on North Main Street so local people can take advantage of low-cost drugs offered at the other Ingles stores?
Answer: State Senator Kevin Bryant, an advocate of free enterprise, owns a drugstore directly across the street from Ingles.

Dear Editor,
I have enjoyed representing Anderson County in the South Carolina Senate since 2005. I also have been blessed to be a part of a family business that my father purchased in 1963.
A letter printed Aug. 8 in the Independent Mail, “Does Bryant not want competition?”, insinuating that I have used my position to prevent a pharmacy from being developed in a grocery store across the street from our family pharmacy.
Please allow me to set the record straight. I do not have any authority involved in the pharmacy licensing process. Also, if I did, I would never prevent any business from providing any service. I have contacted the store management. They are not aware of any pharmacy application, however, I assured them that should they pursue a pharmacy development I will assist them in any way.
I am an advocate of free enterprise and customer options. Your readers will recognize that service in retail pharmacy is excellent in all of Anderson’s drugstores. Healthy competition is an essential factor in all industries, especially the retail business.

Sincerely,
Kevin
