24 hour waiting period making progress
Thanks to the strong leadership of Rep. Greg Delleney (Chester) the bill changing South Carolina’s abortion reflection period from ONE HOUR to TWENTY FOUR HOURS cleared an important hurdle yesterday.
After an hour or so of debate, the SC House Judiciary Committee passed H.3245 on a voice vote without amendment.
The debate was not without fireworks, as freshman pro-life Rep. Wendy Nanney (Greenville) stood tall for the bill in the face of cross-examination by pro-abortion Rep. Todd Rutherford (Richland).
The legislation now moves to the House floor, where it will be up for a vote soon.
Please watch for instructions from Palmetto Family Alliance on how you can help with that key roll call.
If you made a call or sent an email, thank you! If you didn’t, we will need you on the next vote.
Note: At ONE HOUR, South Carolina’s reflection period is the shortest in the country among states with waiting periods. TWENTY FOUR hours is the national standard.

jbotkin, I understand your point, and your concerns are legitimate. However, I think that there is an important distinction that you are failing to make. While gun ownership is a right given us by our constitution, abortion is not a right. Nobody has the right to take anyone else’ life. As you said, it is unfortunately legal, but it’s a lot easier to do wrong than to undo it, and so getting rid of this legalized form of murder is going to be a hard process, and I for one, think that we ought to fight it with whatever weapons are available. Lives are dependent on it! Furthermore, it cannot really be called over regulation, as twenty-four hours is the national standard for the waiting period before an abortion.

I am as pro life as anyone but as a gun owner the term ‘waiting period’ strikes fear deep into my core. Unfortunately abortion is legal. The decision to have an abortion, while immoral, is also legal. There must be a better way to stop abortion than to over regulate it. If you ask me, waiting periods and higher taxes should never be used as a deterrent for legal activity. I do not smoke and being a man I will never have an abortion. So cigarette taxes and abortion waiting periods will not affect personally. However, if we allow the rights of others to be regulated in this manner, it will not be long before the liberals will find a way to these same restrictions on legal activities they find offensive.

Of course there are only 14 states with waiting periods and this “undue burden” is currently being addressed by courts across the country.
